What is an orthodontist?

What is an orthodontist?

Orthodontics is a dental specialty that deals with diagnosing and treating alignment problems pertaining to the teeth and jaw. In order to become an orthodontist, Dr. Potocki not only needed to complete dental school, but also take years of additional training specifically dedicated to this field. This gives him the ability and experience to provide a much higher level of care and address a wider array of problems compared to your average general dentist.

When should I bring my child to an orthodontist?

When should I bring my child to an orthodontist?

You should bring your child in for an orthodontic evaluation if:

  • They are around the age of 7. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends this because it gives doctors a chance to catch problems early and treat them in order to prevent bigger ones in the future.
  • You notice that your child has crooked teeth, a misaligned bite, or issues speaking, eating, or breathing.
  • Your child has a persistent thumb/finger sucking habit past the age of 5.
  • Your child’s dentist has recommended that they visit an orthodontist.

How long does it take braces to straighten the teeth?

How long does it take braces to straighten the teeth?

This answer really depends on the severity of a patient’s misalignment going into treatment. For simpler cases, a braces treatment can usually be completed in around 12 months. For more complicated ones, the process may take 2-3 years. Dr. Potocki can let you know how long a treatment will take when he evaluates you at an initial consultation.

Do braces hurt?

Do braces hurt?

While it’s normal for the teeth and gums to feel a bit sore after braces have been initially put on or adjusted, over time, the mouth should adapt to where a patient hardly notices them. If the cheeks or lips experience any irritation due to the brackets, Dr. Potocki can provide dental wax to smooth over the area. If any discomfort persists for more than a few days, patients can always call him to have their braces adjusted.

Do I really need to straighten my child’s baby teeth?

Do I really need to straighten my child’s baby teeth?

Yes! Your child’s baby teeth enable them to speak and eat properly, plus they help guide the growth of their jaw and face as well as clear the paths for the incoming adult teeth. In short, crooked baby teeth most often lead to crooked adult teeth, but this can easily be lessened or averted completely with early-age orthodontics.
